Garrincha stands out in place of an injured Pele as Brazil knock off Czechoslovakia 3-1 to repeat their World Cup title in 1962 in Chile.
Brazil repeated their World Cup title by beating Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the 1962 final in Chile thanks to an outstanding tournament by "Little Bird" Garrincha. Chile Recovers From Earthquake, No Playoffs For Quarter-FinalsChile was awarded the right to host the 1962 World Cup over neighbors Argentina. The country suffered its biggest earthquake in the century in 1960 but the tournament opened on May 30, 1962 with matches at four venues Santiago, Vina Del Mar, Rancagua and Arica. This was also the first World Cup without playoffs to decide between second and third placed teams that are tied on points. The tournament ran from May 30-June 17, 1962. Brazil's New System, Coaching Brother From 1954 TeamThe Brazilians were the favorites, returning nine players from the 1958 World Cup winning squad. Head coach Aymore Moreira was the brother of Zeze, who coached the Brazilian team at the 1954 World Cup. And Moreira brought with him a new 4-3-3 playing system. Brazil Lose Pele, Garrincha Stands OutAfter becoming the revelation of the 1958 World Cup, Pele was back in the mix for the 1962 spectacle. And he scored one goal in the Brazilians first game – a 2-0 victory over Mexico. But the 21-year-old Pele suffered a left thigh injury in the second game and was forced to miss the rest of the tournament, giving Garrincha a chance to stand out. Italy, Spain, Argentina Ousted, Italy By Chile In "Battle Of Santiago"The first round saw three top teams ousted as Italy, Spain and Argentina were all sent home early. The Italians were ousted thanks to a 2-0 loss against hosts Chile - a match which turned ugly and went down in history as the "Battle of Santiago". Italians Giorgio Ferrini and Mario David were sent off with red cards, David after a neck-high kick at Leonel Sanchez in retaliation for a punch by the Chile player who had earlier broken the nose of Italy's naturalized South American Umberto Maschio. Garrincha Scored Twice Vs England In QuartersAmarildo scored two goals in Brazil's 2-1 win over Spain to reach the quarter-finals. In the final eight, it was Garrincha who doubled up in Brazil's 3-1 win over England, which bounced Argentina in the first round. The hosts Chile surprised the Soviet Union 2-1 to move into the semis while Petar Radakovic's late goal gave Yugoslavia a 1-0 win over West Germany and Adolf Scherer hit early on in Czechoslovakia's 1-0 victory against Hungary. Garrincha, Vava, Scherer Bring Brazil, Czechoslovakia To FinalThe defending champs Brazil ended Chile's surprising run in the semi-finals as Garrincha and Vava both scored twice in a 4-2 victory in front of nearly 80,000 disappointed Chilean fans. Czechoslovakia keeper Vilem Schroif did a fine job in the semi-finals against Yugoslavia and Scherer scored twice in the final 10 minutes in Czechoslovakia's 3-1 semi-final win. Brazil Bounce Back From Early Czechoslovakia LeadCzechoslovakia - back in the tournament after a 24-year absence - played to a scoreless draw against Brazil in the second game of the first round. But the Eastern Europeans were major underdogs in the final. Still, Rudolf Vytlacil's team jumped ahead just 15 minutes in on Josef Masopust's goal. But Amarildo equalized just two minutes later. And Zito (69th) and Vava (78th) struck in the second half to complete the comeback and victory.
