England fought off their fatigue to hand Kazakhstan a trouncing to remain top of the Group Six table.

The wisdom of dragging footballers 3,500 miles into Asia for a FIFA World Cup qualifier at the end of a long season is doubtful, but England did enough to gain this 4-0 victory and maintain their 100 per cent record without over exerting themselves.

Whether it was the after effects of their long journey, or lack of respect to their opponents, England had the worst possible start and almost went a goal down after just 20 seconds.

Glen Johnson's error allowed Zhambyl Kukeev to swing in a cross which if Sergei Ostapenko had met he would have scored.

England Stroll

Kazakhstan, who eight months had been destroyed 5-1 by England in at Wembley, played like a side who did not want to suffer a similar drubbing. And to be fair to them they did not. As a sluggish England struggled to develop any kind a of momentum Ostapenko did put in the back of the net, but his header was ruled offside.

As the30 minute mark approached, England at last showed their travelling supporters what they were capable of as they came close to opening the scoring. Emile Heskey seized onto a poor clearance by Aleksandr Mokin before whacking the ball against the inside of the post.

England's persistence finally paid off in the 39th minute as Steven Gerrard sent the ball to the back post for Gareth Barry to score the opener.

England's stars were displaying nothing like their true form, and just as it seemed as if they were prepared to go in at half time with the comfort of a one goal lead, Emile Heskey took advantage of some poor goalkeeping to make it 2-0.

Capello Rings Changes

Despite having seen side build up a commanding lead during the first half, England boss Fabio Capello made his first change during the half time interval, replacing Theo Wilcott with Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Kazakhstan, who had unsettled England at the start of the game with their blistering pace, lacked the stamina to threaten in the second half. But even that did not appear to be enough to persuade the visitors to up their own tempo.

With the three points now never in doubt, England waited until the 73rd minute before adding their third. Wayne Rooney grabbed his seventh goal in his last six games for his country after his first effort was parried away before the Manchester United star crashed the ball into the top corner of the net with an enthralling effort. .

Four minutes later it was 4-0 as Heskey was brought down in the penalty area, allowing Frank Lampard to score from the spot.
