The record of England and Switzerland matches shows they have played nineteen international games with England winning twelve and drawing four. England are undefeated at home but their last match against Switzerland at Wembley ended 1-1 in the 1996 European Championship Finals Group stage. Alan Shearer had given England an early lead but Switzerland equalised with a late penalty scored by Kubilay Türkyilmaz.
The last meeting was in Portugal in the 2004 European Championships. Wayne Rooney scored twice, making him the youngest scorer in that competition, at that time, and Steven Gerrard got the third as England won comfortably in qualifying for the knock-out stage of the competition.
The first match between the two countries was in Berne in 1933. England won 4-0 in a tour friendly with Cliff Bastin and James Richardson both scoring twice. After taking a first half lead through Bastin, three goals in four minutes completed England’s victory. Richardson made only two appearances for his country and this was to be his last game.
Switzerland’s first game in England resulted in an overwhelming 6-0 defeat at Highbury in 1948. It was the first game in fifteen years that had seen England play without an Arsenal player in the team. John Haines scored an early goal and added a third in the first half, in his only international appearance. Johnny Hancocks scored in each half and Jack Rowley and Jackie Milburn completed the rout in the second half. The team included Billy Wright and Stanley Matthews, while five players were making their debuts, Ted Ditchburn in goal, Alf Ramsey, Rowley, Haines and Hancocks.
Switzerland’s first game at Wembley was a friendly in 1962. England won 3-1 with first half goals from Ron Flowers, Gerry Hitchens and John Connelly. The team included Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves and Johnny Haynes.
The last friendly played at Wembley resulted in a 3-1 win for England in 1995. Switzerland went ahead late in the first half through Adrian Knup but Stuart Pearce equalised three minutes later and second half goals from Teddy Sheringham and substitute Steve Stone secured the victory.
England defeated Switzerland at Wembley in a World Cup qualifying game in 1980. Two first half goals, an own goal and one from Paul Mariner set England up for victory with Switzerland only managing to record one second half strike from Hans-Jörg Pfister.
The only scoreless draw between the two countries was at Wembley in 1977 while the European qualifying game in 1971 ended 1-1 with first half the goals from Mike Summerbee, to give England an early lead, and Karl Odermatt.
England look to maintain their unbeaten home record but Switzerland have shown in previous meetings that they will provide difficult opposition in manager Fabio Capello’s first game in charge, a game that will not have David Beckham making his one hundredth international appearance as he has been omitted from the squad.
